The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre hosted a visit from the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste His Excellency Mr Taur Matan Ruak on July 6.

Mr Ruak was visiting Australia at the invitation of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and was accompanied by his wife, the First Lady, Mrs Isabel da Costa Ferreira.

The President met with Dr Len Notaras AM, Executive Director of the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre for discussions around education, training and disaster response capabilities.

The Centre has provided medical support for the Tour de Timor mountain bike race last year and in 2011.

Dr Notaras said the Centre had a strong and ongoing relationship with Timor-Leste and today's meeting would further enhance opportunities to work together.

"The Centre has worked with the Timor-Leste Ministry of Health to provide medical support and training opportunities during the 2011 and 2012 Tour de Timor," Dr Notaras said.

"I look forward to talks with His Excellency to ensure we can continue to develop our relationship with the Timor-Leste."

The NCCTRC is developing an international reputation for disaster response and training providing more than 1000 training places in 2012 and again in 2013.
